The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, and some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have arrived at the Accra High Court to show their support for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The NPP members were present at the court on Monday, July 27, 2026, as proceedings continued in the GH¢14.3 million Exim Bank case involving Chairman Wontumi and other accused persons.

Their presence at the court was seen as a show of support for the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman as he faces legal proceedings in the case.

Wontumi Faces Charges in Exim Bank Case

The court further ordered that Chairman Wontumi would face an additional three-year prison sentence if he failed to pay the fine imposed on him.

This means that, in addition to the 20-year prison sentence, he could serve another three years if the GH¢120,000 fine is not paid.

The conviction in the illegal mining case has therefore added to the legal challenges currently facing the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman.

Support From NPP Members

Despite the legal challenges, Sammi Awuku and other NPP members went to the Accra High Court to show their support for Wontumi.

Their presence demonstrates the continued support he has received from some members of his political party as he deals with the ongoing court cases.
