Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche, who was believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, has died.
Reports say he died in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
His death happened just weeks after businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama promised to pay all his medical bills after Awuche asked for help to get urgent treatment.
The support came after Awuche’s health reportedly became worse because of problems linked to gigantism. Doctors then moved him from the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
According to his family, doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital said his left leg had to be amputated after a serious infection caused part of the leg to rot.
In an earlier Facebook post, Ibrahim Mahama’s aide, Rafik Mahama, confirmed the support. He said he had contacted Awuche and his family on behalf of the businessman to tell them that all his medical costs would be paid.
“On behalf of Mr Ibrahim Mahama, I have reached out to Awuche and his family to assure them of our full support during this challenging time,” he earlier wrote.
“Mr Ibrahim Mahama has pledged to fully cover Awuche’s hospital bills, including the costs of his medical treatment and surgery,” he added.
Rafik Mahama also said plans had been made to take Awuche to the Tamale Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, July 8, 2026. Awuche arrived safely and started the medical treatment he needed.
The 33-year-old Awuche was from Gambaga in the North East Region. He was believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, standing about 7 feet 8 inches tall.
Awuche had reportedly lived with gigantism for several years but could not get special medical treatment because he did not have enough money.
His call for help received a lot of attention after it was revealed that he needed urgent surgery to save his life.
