Bankers Football League 2026 launched as 10 Ghanaian banks prepare for new season
The 2026 Bankers Football League has officially been launched, with 10 banks set to compete in what organisers describe as the biggest and most exciting edition of the competition yet.
The launch and official balloting ceremony took place at the GCB Bank Head Office in Accra last Friday.
Representatives from participating banks, sponsors, partners and members of the media attended the event as preparations began for the new season.
The league has become an important sporting event within Ghana’s banking industry, giving banking professionals an opportunity to compete, exercise and build stronger relationships outside the workplace.
Ten Banks to Compete
The 2026 Bankers Football League will feature 10 participating institutions.
They are:
GCB Bank
Republic Bank
GTCO
SG Bank
UBA
UMB
Ecobank
Zenith Bank
Bank of Ghana
Stanbic Bank
The competition has grown significantly since its early years.
According to the organisers, the league began in 2019 with only four pioneering institutions. Stanbic Bank, NIB Bank, Access Bank and Republic Bank were among the teams that helped establish the competition.
Stanbic Bank went on to become the first champions.
New Features for 2026
Organisers have promised several improvements for the 2026 season.
These include better officiating, improved matchday experiences, increased media coverage and new awards.
The organisers also want to make the competition more enjoyable for supporters and participants.
The league is not only about winning football matches. It is also designed to promote teamwork, friendship and healthy living among people working in Ghana’s banking sector.
Erica Bansah, who represented the organising team, encouraged players to compete with passion, discipline, respect and integrity.
She also noted that football can teach important lessons about leadership, resilience and teamwork.
Bankers Football Gala Set for August 29
One of the major attractions this year will be a special Bankers Football Gala Festival.
The event is scheduled for August 29, 2026.
Eight banks will take part in the gala, divided into two groups of four.

Bank of Ghana

Stanbic Bank
Republic Bank
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
This gives the participating banks another opportunity to test their squads before the main league competition gets fully underway.
GCB Bank Backs the Competition
GCB Bank hosted the launch and has again expressed its support for the competition.
Kwabena Yeboah, Head of People and Culture at GCB Bank, welcomed the participating institutions and highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for banking professionals to relax and connect.
He said the competition provides a break from the pressure of the banking industry.
Yeboah also joked about GCB Bank’s ambition to win the competition, showing that the friendly rivalry between the participating institutions is already building.
More Than Just Football
The Bankers Football League has become more than an ordinary workplace competition.
Banking is often a demanding profession, with employees dealing with customers, financial targets, deadlines and other responsibilities.
The football league provides a chance for workers to step away from their normal routines and take part in physical activity.

GCB Looking to Defend Its Reputation
GCB Bank will enter the new season with plenty of confidence.
The bank won the 2025 Bankers Football League after finishing the 16-week competition at the top of the table.
GCB collected 38 points and finished ahead of UMB, who had 36 points. NIB finished third with 31 points.
GCB’s victory came after a closely fought title race that went down to the final matchday.
That success means other banks will be looking to stop GCB from enjoying another strong campaign.
UMB, NIB and the other participating teams will have their own ambitions as the new competition gets underway.
A Growing Sporting Tradition
The growth of the Bankers Football League shows how corporate sports can bring people together beyond their normal professional roles.
What began with a small number of banks has developed into a competition involving many of Ghana’s leading financial institutions.
