Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah says Ghana was unlucky in the 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Ghana suffered the loss at the Accra Sports Stadium despite taking a 2-0 lead through goals from Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan.
The Gambia fought back by taking advantage of mistakes in Ghana’s defence.
Mensah was involved in one of the defensive errors when his tackle on a Gambian player resulted in a penalty. The Gambia converted the penalty to score their first goal of the match.
Mensah was also involved in another costly mistake later in the game. A poor back pass from the defender gave possession to Ebrima Colley, who scored The Gambia’s third goal.
Speaking after the disappointing defeat, Mensah expressed his frustration with the result and said:
“We have to accept that luck wasn’t on our side and we probably didn’t perform as we were supposed to perform. As a captain today, I feel like I will also take responsibility for everything that happened today” Gideon Mensah said.
The defeat was another setback for Ghana in the 2027 AFCON qualification campaign.
