PHOTOS: Ghana holds state funeral for former Foreign Affairs Minister James Victor Gbeho
The Government of Ghana has held a state funeral in honour of former Foreign Affairs Minister and former President of the ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho.
The funeral was held on Friday, July 31, at the forecourt of the State House in Accra to celebrate the life and service of the respected Ghanaian diplomat.
Ambassador Gbeho was honoured for his long years of service to Ghana, the West African sub-region and the international community.
President Mahama and Other Dignitaries Attend
The ceremony brought together several important personalities from Ghana and beyond.
Among those present were President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
The event also attracted former President of Namibia Dr Nangolo Mbumba, Members of Parliament, government officials and executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the United Nations, traditional leaders, family members, friends and sympathisers also attended the ceremony.
Other dignitaries from Ghana and outside the country joined the gathering to pay their final respects to the late statesman.
A Solemn Ceremony
The state funeral featured several activities in honour of Ambassador Gbeho. The service included prayers, the singing of hymns, choral performances and scripture readings.
A Life of Public Service
Although the funeral was a solemn occasion, it was also a time to celebrate the life of a man who devoted many years to serving his country.
Mourners reflected on Ambassador Gbeho’s contributions to diplomacy, international relations and nation-building.

Ambassador Gbeho’s Diplomatic Career
Ambassador James Victor Gbeho died on June 13, 2026, at the age of 91.
He spent more than five decades serving Ghana and rose through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During his career, he served in several important positions, including Chief Director and Deputy Minister before eventually becoming Minister for Foreign Affairs.
His work took him beyond Ghana, where he played important roles in international diplomacy.
Service to the United Nations and ECOWAS
Ambassador Gbeho also served as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia. His experience and diplomatic skills later led him to serve as President of the ECOWAS Commission.
In that position, he worked to promote cooperation and regional integration among countries in West Africa.
His efforts contributed to the wider goal of strengthening relations among member states and promoting peace and development across the region.

Throughout his long career, he earned respect both in Ghana and internationally for his commitment to diplomacy and public service.
